New entrance scholarship process gives future VIU students more certainty

Record amount of funding available for entrance scholarships

Planning for post-secondary shouldn’t feel like a leap into the unknown. That’s why VIU has introduced a new entrance scholarship process that aims to give prospective students more certainty over how they will pay for their education – and sooner. With a shorter application and an earlier deadline, students can find out as early as February if they’re selected for an entrance scholarship. Thanks to generous donors, VIU is also offering more entrance scholarships than ever before – boosting your chances of success.

We asked our Financial Aid and Awards and Future Students teams for more info:

Can you tell us a bit about the entrance scholarship profile?

The Entrance Awards Application is a separate process with an earlier deadline for students who are considering VIU. The application is much shorter, and the earlier deadline means we can let students know as early as February whether they were selected to receive an award if they chose to attend VIU.

What do prospective students need to do to apply?

You need a VIU student number, which you will get after you apply. If you’re applying to VIU for the first time, we highly recommend connecting with a Recruitment Officer. The team can assist with admission-related inquiries, provide insight into campus life and housing options, and guide you through the process of submitting your application. You can book an appointment on the Connect with a Recruiter webpage.

How much money is available and for who?

For fall of 2026, VIU has more than $300,000 to give out. Entrance awards vary in amount. Many are between $1,000 and $2,500. There are also program and area-specific awards that provide larger amount.

What sort of impact can this have for a prospective student?

Students often make their decisions about where they want to go to school based on how much support they may receive in entrance awards. Cost of living, including how much it costs to live in student residence, plays into this decision making.
