From the president's desk: Leadership search update

An update from Interim President Dr. Dennis Johnson

I am writing to share an update on several important leadership searches that will be moving forward imminently.

VIU will be moving ahead with the search for a Chief Operating Officer and Vice-President, Administration. This revised role reflects the importance of strong, focused leadership for the operational areas that support our students, employees and academic work every day. The portfolio will include areas such as facilities, campus operations, information technology, ancillary services and student housing. As VIU moves into its next phase, this position will help ensure we have the right systems, services and supports in place to serve the University well.

In the coming months, we also expect to begin the search process for a Provost and Vice-President Academic. This role is central to VIU’s academic leadership and will be important as we continue to support students, advance academic priorities and prepare for the University’s next strategic planning cycle.

These postings come at an important time for VIU. The University is in a much stronger position then we were just 12 months ago, and that progress did not happen by chance. It reflects the commitment and steady work of many people across the University, including leaders who guided VIU through a difficult period and stepped into acting and interim roles when VIU needed them. Their leadership, professionalism and willingness have created the stability we need to move forward with confidence, make thoughtful decisions about future leadership and continue building the conditions for long-term success.

These searches are also taking place while the University Secretariat continues to support the Presidential Search process and begins the process to appoint VIU’s next Chancellor, following Cloy-iis, Dr. Judith Sayers’ term ending in October.

There is still important work ahead, but I am optimistic about VIU’s future. These searches are an important part of the next phase: strengthening our leadership, supporting our people and positioning the University for sustainable, future-focused growth.

I look forward to keeping the community informed as these processes move ahead.
