Welcome back from VIU President Dr. Deborah Saucier

Dear colleagues,

As we gather for the start of a new academic year, I am excited about the journeys of learning, discovery, innovation, and collaboration that will soon be underway on our campuses.

I am incredibly proud to support this work, and our culture of inclusivity here at VIU that empowers us to remove barriers to post-secondary education and welcome all learners.

Our commitment to providing our learners with the highest-quality education remains unwavering, driven by the dedication and expertise of our faculty and staff. You are our institution's heartbeat, our backbone, enabling us to realize our mission and provide life-changing experiences for our learners. You empower our students and help shape our province and world through your ground-breaking research, scholarship, creative practice, and ensure that our community is supportive and welcoming. Thank you for your commitment to VIU.

I want to extend a special welcome to our new staff and faculty. I recognize that you have chosen VIU because you are committed to our purpose and see that you can make a difference. Please do not be shy about sharing your knowledge, ideas, and learnings. Our strength lies in our diversity, and by embracing fresh perspectives and experiences, we will become an even stronger institution.

This year will be one of growth and transformation. We have challenges ahead, but I am confident that, together, we have the right people with the right skill sets to overcome them. As we seize new opportunities, I want us all to remember our values of understanding, connection, and commitment, which we underpin with kindness. We will make a difference through respectful discourse and cooperation and emerge as a stronger, more resilient university.

I look forward to seeing everyone at our welcome-back lunch at noon in the quad between the upper cafeteria and library this Wednesday, August 30. Before lunch, I encourage you all to join Richard Horbachewski, Associate Vice-President of External Relations, for an update on the work underway this past year on our brand identity at 11:30 am in the Malaspina Theatre. This is part of the work that we are doing to support our recruitment and retention activities by establishing who we are and what we offer to prospective students and our current learners. I am also pleased to share that our Senior Management Team information sessions will return this October.

I am honoured to be your university president, and I look forward to everything we will achieve together in the year ahead. I wish you all a year of discovery, success, and meaningful connections.

Sincerely,

Dr. Deborah Saucier
